APPRENTICE PROGRAM

After a very lengthy hiatus of over ten years the Electric Boat/MTC Apprentice Program was restarted. The hiring of approximately 200 plus new carpenters afforded the perfect opportunity to form the first carpenter apprentice class in November of 2002 followed by a second class in March of 2003. A third class may be started in April of 2004.

The program agreed upon by labor and management is a four- year program consisting of 8000 hours of practical on the job work experience and a variety of classroom instructions.  Each apprentice spends an allotted amount of hours in the varied disciplines that carpenter’s in this shipyard perform. They include Joiner Shop, Lines of Ship, Staging, Vibration Dampening, Thermal and Acoustic Installations, Acoustic Manufacturing, Blocking, Deck Tiles and Treatments, Upholstery Shop and Lead Ballast Installation.

In addition to the core program any Apprentice may take part in a degree program which is the only one of its kind in existence. This program is paid for by Electric Boat in conjunction with Three Rivers Community College and done on company time. The apprentice is responsible for books and approximately $125.00 of administrative fees. With approximately 23 credits transferable from the core program an apprentice can complete an associates degree in five years.  Following is a list of the first and second class of apprentices.  I would like to thank Donovan Kniss for the nice write up, information and his hard work as the union's representative.
