MAY 2009 LABOR’S VIEWS

Service awards to members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America for the month of May were presented to:

Robert Dion                 35 yrs.

Ralph Palmieri            35 yrs.

At the May Union meeting nominations for all officers, delegates, and stewards will take place.  If anyone is interested in running for one of these positions, you will need to have someone nominate you, and you will need to accept the nomination at the meeting.  In June, elections will be held for all positions.  Members should have been notified of nominations and the election date and time by mail.  To be eligible to vote, you must be a member in good standing at the time of the election.  I will post on all area bulletin boards the names of those who can vote and those who cannot.

I want to welcome the new hires and former brothers and sisters who have returned to Local 1302.  For those of you who have not been previously employed by EB, I know it is a big place, and it will take some getting used to.  It would be appreciated if current members would assist the new people as they become acclimated to their jobs.

Apparently the Company has decided to enforce the “No Smoking and Tobacco Free” policy on Company property by August 2, 2009.  If you have previously tried to quit smoking by using the prescription drug Chantix, you need to know that you are eligible for a six month’s supply every year.  Good luck to those of you who have not yet successfully quit smoking.

On July 1, 2009, the new changes in the SSIP will go into effect for MTC employees.  During the week of May 4, 2009, the Company provided overviews of the SSIP options to MTC employees.  If you weren’t able to attend those informational meetings, I would encourage you to check with your area Union steward or call Employee Benefits to answer any questions you may have.  I also encourage you to participate in this program because we still have Company contributions.  The Company matching that we are offered is becoming rare in this economy.  Even though we lost dollar for dollar matching up to 10%, this is still a very good plan to invest in for your retirement.

Safety Bonus:  Our lost work days for the first quarter were 1.9%.  The goal that we need to stay below is 3.1% lost work days in order to achieve our safety bonus.  As far as our other safety bonus goes (the strains and sprains program at 16J), we are also on track to achieve that bonus.  It is still early…..this is only the first quarter.  Hopefully, we will continue to keep our rate of lost work days low.
