September-05 Labor Views

Congratulations are extended to Ron Edmiston who retired after 29 years of service.  We wish him many years of good health.

Our members are having parking problems at the sub base.  Employees don’t want to go to the sub base because it is so difficult to find a parking place that doesn’t require you to walk a mile to get where you are going.   Perhaps a solution to the problem would be to employ a shuttle between EB and the sub base.  If anyone has other ideas to help with this problem, I encourage you to let me know your suggestions.

On September 13, 2005, the Company is sponsoring a health screening day.  This is a great opportunity for those of you who don’t get a physical exam from your family physician to get a blood pressure screen, a cholesterol check, etc.  Take advantage of the services offered in the yard on Sept. 13.

Family Day is scheduled for October 1, 2005.  I feel that it is important for the Carpenters’ Union to participate and show how diversified our skills are.  If anyone is interested or has any ideas about displays, please contact Don Kniss or me.  We already have several displays planned which showcase our various jobs, but perhaps you have one in mind that we haven’t thought of.

Some concerns have arisen recently because members are displeased with what is happening at the yard hospital regarding light duty.   Employees have been asked to report to the yard hospital while they are out of work due to work-related injuries.  Upon arriving at the yard hospital, they have been instructed to undergo a physical examination by the Company doctor.   If any employee feels that the Company is overstepping their boundaries by requiring you to return to work, you have the right to seek legal advice from an attorney, and I would encourage you to do that.

SCAFF-TAG:  The new scaffolding inspection and tagging system has been used for three months with great success.  It will be extended throughout the shipyard and the sub base starting September 6, 2005.  This program’s success is an example of how Management, the Carpenters’ Union, and the Safety Department worked together to improve safety at Electric Boat.

Have you visited our website lately?  Check out the information posted at www.local1302.com.

Our next Union meeting will be on September 8, 2005, at 2:45 at the Union Hall on Thames Street, Groton.  Input from our membership is important, and I encourage all members to become active in their Union.  We like to hear what you have to say.

Fraternally yours,

Michael Malone
President
